Helping Our Community After Helene
This week has been one of the hardest for our WNC communities. So many animal rescues were devestated or destroyed. Homes were washed away and even more animals displaced. Here at Sarge’s, we are OK! And with our state of being so lucky to avoid the worst the storm had to bring, we have hit the streets of our communities with much needed pet food and supplies for those families that need it most.
On Thursday, 10/03/24, our Board Member Kelley Pezzella shared, “Sarge’s went “mobile” into some of the hardest hit areas in Haywood County to distribute much-needed pet food & supplies (crates, carriers, bedding, leashes, collars, cat litter, disposable litter boxes, cleaning supplies, water, some human food, etc). We dropped donations at distribution sites in Cruso, Bethel, FUMC Waynesville, IP Sports Complex in Canton.”
Sarge’s Board President Windy McKinney (pictured above) said, “Our volunteers at Sarge’s CAME THROUGH. They helped us out by bagging and loading food, at the distribution centers, and helping people find the right food for their pets.” She let us know that those in Cruso were still in a state of shock with what has happened, again to their town…and rightly so. Cruso had extreme flooding and damage in 2021, when a flash flood likened to a wall of water killed six people and left utter destruction in its wake. They were just recovering when Helene hit this last week.
Sarge’s spent today, Friday October 4th, setting up pre-bagged food for our community to pick up at our Waynesville location and plans to continue its efforts to bring food to those who need it and allow easy pick-up for those in town.
Tomorrow, Saturday October 5th, Sarge’s will be bringing food to Pigeon Community Center, Beaverdam Community Center, and wherever we’re needed. Whatever we have left over will go to the Canton Sports Complex for wider distribution.
