Adopt Or Foster A Pet
We take dogs and puppies from many sources in Western North Carolina. Intakes are sourced from Animal Shelters and individuals alike. They are all tested for heartworm or Feline Leukemia/FIV, given appropriate vaccinations and preventatives for heartworms and fleas, and if they are old enough they have been spayed or neutered. They are socialized as time permits and many have been taught basic commands. We enjoy placing animals into loving and responsible homes, and we appreciate that our adopters have sought out rescue animals.

The number one reason to adopt a pet is to save life. According to the Humane Society of the United States, each year, 2.7 million adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized in the United States, simply because too many pets come into shelters and too few people consider adoption when looking for a pet. We are fortunate that in Haywood County, our public shelter has achieved “no-kill status”, and that is due to the efforts of Sarge’s and other groups like us who assist the shelter in the placement of homeless dogs and cats. This work must continue to avoid a return to the situation in 2005, when an average of 50 animals per week were put down because of a lack of space in the county shelter.
Our Adoption Process
Many times we feel it is appropriate to collect several adoption applications to choose the most appropriate home from those requests. This means that adoptions are rarely approved on a first-come, first-served basis. This is often the case with puppies, small and medium-size dogs, and specific high-demand breeds. These animals usually have more than one family interested in adopting. We select the best home from the collected requests. These are sometimes difficult decisions for us to make, but we always strive to choose the best for the animal while being fair to potential adopters.

For example, we might choose an adopter with a fenced yard for a dog with a wandering history over an adopter without a fenced yard and that might be the only difference. For younger dogs and puppies, we will contact veterinary references to verify that animals currently in the applicant’s household are fully vaccinated and have received routine wellness checks. The thorough medical care of an applicant’s current pets is a good baseline indicator of the care a prospective new furry family member will receive as he/she grows into adulthood. Applicants whose veterinary caretakers provide a stellar and thorough reference will receive prioritized consideration regardless of when the application was submitted.

Complete an adoption form or foster form to start the process and to be considered!

After your application is submitted, you should receive confirmation via email that it has been received from info@sarges.org.

If your application was approved but was not chosen for the pet you selected, we will make every effort to introduce you to other pets. It is first come first serve for applications and approvals.

We will keep your application on file for 60 days. Approved applications will maintain “approved” status for that length and can be applied to appropriate matches in that timeframe. (Subject to the discretion of the adoption manager)
• Please note that it could take a few days to a week to hear from us regarding a decision concerning your application. Responses will be sent to the email indicated on your application. Please be sure to check that email account to stay updated on the process.​
• We do require you to meet the animal you applied for prior to final approval. Please also be prepared to bring your current dog to meet our dog.
• If you rent your home, we will contact your landlord to confirm pet policy and acceptability (i.e. breed, size, etc.)
• All members of any household must be in agreement with the potential adoption.
• Applications that are not fully completed will not be considered.
• All adopters must be 18 years of age or older to be considered.
• Falsifying or misrepresenting any details on the application will result in immediate adoption disqualification and could lead to a permanent ban from adopting Sarge animals.
